Being a Webcam Model: What to Do When A Client Gets Too Close for Comfort

Being a webcam model

Being a webcam model is a lucrative career; models can benefit from flexible hours and the ability to be their own boss. However, it is important to be prepared for those instances where clients get a little too close for comfort. It’s fundamental to remember that you always have the power to say no. Always ensure you are comfortable with what you are doing and being true to yourself; authenticity is key. Here at OTR Models, we’re experienced cam girl models ourselves. Here’s our advice on what to do if a client takes things a step too far.

Display Boundaries

Sometimes, clients won’t mean to offend; maybe it’s a compliment that didn’t come out right, a bad joke, but if it leaves you feeling like ‘that was weird’, then it should never have been said. Interactions via cam in the adult industry are always amplified and it can be difficult knowing how to navigate these situations accordingly. The best thing to do is shut down the behaviour as soon as you can – there are a number of ways to do this.

To deter unwanted comments, you can display a list of things that you definitely do not do on your profile. This gives a clear and prior warning to existing and potential clients that you are not here for what you’re not comfortable with. If you have it in writing, it is an easy point of reference to show them should they ask for something out of the ordinary.

Some of our models have a list of ‘do’s and don’ts’ on their profiles. This helps to avoid miscommunication from the very start and prevents awkward encounters with clients. The list doesn’t have to just list specific acts themselves; it can also be things like ‘I do not work on a Friday night’. Be sure to cover yourself and set all those boundaries early on.

What If It’s A Regular?

Being a webcam model is your job. Just because a client pays you regularly, it does not mean they are entitled to say whatever they want to you. If you do not want to do something, you don’t have to do it – it’s as simple as that. If you get an out of character comment from a regular customer, consider how close you are and go from there. There’s always a chance that something could have been meant playfully but has come out the wrong way in the excitement. Pull the client up and correct them on it! Maybe they misunderstood their boundaries with you – never feel afraid to rectify your customers.

Divert the Conversation

Being a webcam model often means thinking on your feet. You can also divert the conversation with a smart answer to gently push the client away. Creepy commentary is uncalled for, so a witty answer to their questions throws the ball away. Tell your client that you live with your partner and work as a cam girl model for your joint business. This eliminates the mentality that you are after attention, or love. Sensible clients will not make advances after they are brought back down to earth a little.

Be Honest and Stand Your Ground

If a client asks you to meet and you do not want to, be honest. Say that it’s not possible. Being honest from the get-go decreases the chances of persistent asking. They know that a cam girl model is an online service only, so chances are, they were just trying their luck this time around. Stay professional and always have a backup answer ready for private questions like ‘where do you live?’ Consistently give a fake town or city to keep yourself as safe as possible.

Likewise, some clients enjoy talking to cam girls about bigger issues, such as relationship problems, loneliness and even past traumas. It’s absolutely fine to empathise with your clients, but you should not go beyond that point. Being a webcam model involves getting to know your clients, but never feel pressure to provide them with more than you signed up for. You are selling a fantasy, so don’t feel obliged to be their therapist!

Many clients will understand that you are in your career for the high job satisfaction and financial benefits, but there may be a time when you have to lose a customer or two for standing your ground. Sometime this is necessary, and you should never be afraid to ignore or block clients who aren’t getting the message.
